Editing 270th Communication Center

'''270th Communications Center''' ('''Military Unit 36203'''), commonly associated with the '''Goliaf Transmitter''', is a Russian military communications facility located in [[wikipedia:Nizhny_Novgorod|Nizhny Novgorod]] (Нижний Новгород), Russia.

The facility is associated with long-range military radio communications and is notable for its large VLF antenna infrastructure. In radio monitoring reports, the site has also been associated with the Russian military communications station '''NTFZh''', whose transmissions have been observed on HF frequencies following the attribution of the station to the facility in September 2026.

The relationship between the Goliaf transmitter, the 270th Communications Center and individual radio networks is not fully documented in publicly available sources. The association of NTFZh with Military Unit 36203 therefore remains a working attribution rather than a definitively confirmed identification.

== Facility ==

The 270th Communications Center is a Russian military communications installation associated with '''Military Unit 36203''' and the '''Goliaf''' transmitter system.

The facility is particularly notable for its VLF transmission infrastructure, including large antenna systems intended for long-range communications. The Goliaf system is generally associated with very-low-frequency military communications, while other transmitters and radio systems located at or associated with the communications center may operate in different frequency ranges.

The exact division of equipment and functions within the facility is not publicly established. Consequently, references to the '''Goliaf Transmitter''' should not necessarily be interpreted as referring to every transmitter or radio system operating from the site.

== Association with NTFZh ==

Since '''01/09/2026''', radio monitoring observations have attributed the military station '''NTFZh''' to the 270th Communications Center in Nizhny Novgorod. Earlier direction-finding investigations had placed the station elsewhere in western Russia, but subsequent TDoA-based investigations resulted in the Nizhny Novgorod attribution. This remains an assessment based on radio observations rather than a confirmed official identification.

NTFZh has been observed using a number of HF frequencies and transmission modes, including USB voice, Morse code and military digital modes. Its activity has included structured military message traffic, microphone tests, parallel voice/CW transmissions and encrypted digital communications.

The presence of NTFZh activity in connection with the facility does not establish that NTFZh represents the entire communications center or the Goliaf VLF transmitter itself. Rather, NTFZh is considered one of the military communications identities associated with the site.

Radio monitoring of NTFZh has identified several recurring transmission characteristics.

The monitored HF transmissions are distinct from the VLF role generally associated with the Goliaf transmitter. The exact technical relationship between the HF equipment used by NTFZh and the VLF transmitter infrastructure at the facility is unknown.

The NTFZh station has been observed transmitting on a variety of frequencies depending on propagation conditions and operational requirements. Its primary monitored frequency during the period documented in 2026 was 4844 kHz.

== Goliaf VLF transmitter ==

The '''Goliaf Transmitter''' is associated with the VLF communications infrastructure of the 270th Communications Center.

VLF transmitters use very low radio frequencies to provide long-range propagation, making them suitable for certain military communications applications. The large physical dimensions of VLF antenna systems are a characteristic consequence of the extremely long wavelengths involved.

The facility's large antenna structures are therefore considerably different from the HF antennas normally associated with the monitored NTFZh transmissions. Although both systems are associated with the same military communications installation, there is currently insufficient public information to establish that they form a single transmitter system or directly share the same radio equipment.

== Technical and operational observations ==

Monitoring of NTFZh during July–September 2026 showed a combination of voice, Morse and digital military traffic. The station has used several frequencies simultaneously or in rapid succession, including parallel voice and CW transmissions carrying identical message content.

On 07/09/2026, for example, a Monolit-format voice message was observed on 4844 kHz while a corresponding Morse transmission was heard on 4862 kHz. The station has also transmitted formal sign-off announcements indicating that the transmitter was about to be switched off, suggesting scheduled rather than continuous operation.

Observed digital activity has included CIS-12 (T-230) and CIS-20 traffic, as well as RDFT and RTTY transmissions. These signals have appeared during scheduled transmission periods and during apparent equipment or propagation tests.

The attribution of NTFZh to the 270th Communications Center was revised on '''01/09/2026'''. Prior investigations had considered locations in the Leningrad Oblast and near Lodeynoye Pole, potentially involving the 334th Radio-Technical Regiment (Military Unit 96848). These earlier attributions were not confirmed.
