SYNK Radio is an independent station operating in the West Midlands region of England. Constructed, engineered, and managed by Blake, a 17-year-old developer and systems administrator, it offers continuous and seamless music streaming tailored for the general audience as well as virtual truckers, sim racers, and gamers.
SYNK Radio operates 24 hours a day through its digital web stream and the SimTX network on 103.0 MHz FM frequency.
History and Description
At first, it was a personal project aimed to provide high-quality uninterrupted sound without any regular radio interruptions. Using the private technical equipment in the West Midlands, Blake controls the whole process from the creation of stream encoding to audio processing and playout architecture and web services.
There are no live studio hosts and resident DJs in this station. It uses an automated playout system that produces continuous stream of back-to-back tracks 24/7, including no talk shows, advertisements, and other planned broadcasts.
Transmission and SimTX Broadcast
Besides being available on the website web player, SYNK Radio broadcasts on the SimTX network using the 103.0 MHz FM frequency.
Its signal provides full RDS (Radio Data System) functionality, including the information about programs and current track metadata, as well as SYNK Radio station identification for software-defined radios and in-game FM receivers in driving and flight simulators.
Technical Infrastructure
SYNK Radio works with a combination of software to provide the web stream and SimTX feed:
- Broadcast Automation: Automated server that manages tracks queueing, dynamic volume leveling, sound processing, and 24/7 stream output.
- SimTX FM Link: GNU Radio to be able to have a stereo feed and RDS support - which is then piped into the SimTX official transmitter app.
- Web Audio Stream: High bitrate audio streams are hosted on the official website providing instant connection to the stream without any third party software.
- SYNK Radio API: Public backend API that provides live metadata for third-party developers. It provides now playing track, artist, musical key and synchronized lyrics.
- Discord Integration: Dedicated bot that routes audio stream into community voice channels for gaming and logistics communities.
Musical Output and Format
The station focuses on fast-paced, rhythm-based music to be used as background audio for games, coding, and ordinary activities.
The typical rotation of tracks is the following:
- Drum & Bass (liquid, jump-up, and dancefloor)
- Electronic and dance
- UK and international rap
- Independent and underground electronic music
